Following amendaments to the bylaws between 1971 and 1975, the Association set up in 1969 became a Foundation.

On the 30th March, 1976, the Foundation was incorporated as a nonprofit-making scientific organisation under a decree of the President of Republic of Italy.

From its inauguration (which took place on the 22nd June, 1970), the Foundation has promoted the diffusion of biomedical and, more in general, scientific knowledge, both in Italy and abroad.

In 1984, the Giovanni Lorenzini Medical Foundation, a legal corporation entirely independent of the original parent Foundation, was incorporated in Houston, Texas, a nonprofit organisation.
